El Cinco de Noviembre
Silay City will commemorate the 111th anniversary of El Cinco de Noviembre 1898 on November 5 on the theme “Ugyon Silaynon, Kauswagan Padayunon”.
Mayor Jose Montelibano said that this celebration is a thanksgiving for the awards and citations received by Silay City which include National Star Award for Silay TB DOTS Center; Sandugo Hall of Fame Award for Brgy. E. Lopez; PNRC Sandugo Award for Brgy. IV; championship trophy for Funrobics of Silay Diabetic Society; national finalist for Healthy Lifestyle Advocates; and a grant for Reporductive Health Program.
Montelibano added that the recent national awards for Silay came from the Dept. of Tourism and the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines wherein Hugyaw Kansilay Festival (June 6-12) won first runner - up in the Best Tourism Event of the Philippines – component city category, and Severino Pacete, tourism officer of Silay, was chosen Most Outstanding Tourism Officer of the Philippines.
After the 6 a.m. Thanksgiving Mass at San Diego Pro-Cathedral, Silaynons will reenact “Heroes March to Freedom” and the opening program will be held at the Cinco de Noviembre Marker at Brgy. Cinco de Noviembre.
Messages will be given by Gov. Isidro Zayco, Cong. Jose Carlos Lacson, Mayor Jose Montelibano, Vice Mayor Mark Golez, Councilor Jose Raymundo Locsin and Punong Barangay Efren Dequilla. The master of ceremony is Ver Pacete, tourism officer.
“Panumbalik – Kasaysayan”, a theatrical presentation directed by Imak Salmingo of the Christain Community Theater – Silay Chapter will highlight the program.
The mural painting on the “Silay Bloodless Revolution” performed by the local artist will be opened to public under the supervision of Solo Locsin, consultant on historical research and Achilles Corteza, deputy director for the culture and the arts.
By 10 a.m., Adobo and Muscovado Festival will officially start at Balay Negrense Museum lawn in a barrio fiesta setting.
Maida Jison, museum director, said that there are 20 participants in the cooking competition and the winners will receive cash prizes and certificates of recognition.
Honored guests at the festival are Gov. Sally Perez of Antique, Gov. Gwen Garcia of Cebu and Director Cecile Guidote Alvarez of the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts.
Adobo, delicacies and souvenir items for sale will be made available for visitors and “Paniaga Rebolusyonaryo” will be hosted by Brgy.Cinco de Noviembre Council.
Meanwhile, Revolution Against Climate Change” is the Negros Day offering of the University of St. La Salle in Brgy. Balaring where 70 students will plant mangrove seedlings at Silay Ecotourism Park.
Other activities at the public plaza are Kasaysayan Drum Corps Competition (2p.m.), Cinco de Noviembre Challenge (4p.m.), Gourmet Adobo Demonstration (4 p.m., Civic Center), Dance-Drama Competition (5p.m.), Fireworks Display (8p.m.), and the Evening Comedy Show (8p.m.) sponsored by Albee Benitez featuring Giselle Sanchez.
