52nd Charter Day Week
Silay City will celebrate its 52nd Charter Day Week on June 6 – 12, 2009. The theme of the celebration is “Bulawanon nga Kahapon, Masanag nga Palaaboton” (Golden Yesteryears, Bright Future).
Silay became a city on June 12, 1951, with the help of Sen. Jose Locsin, Mayor Romulo Golez, Rep. Jose Puey of Sagay and Rep. Carlos Hilado of Bacolod City.
House Bill No. 6096 became Republic Act No. 1621 known as Charter of Silay City and the day of approval was June 12, 1957. Silay was the second town in Negros Occidental to become a City.
Mayor Jose Montelibano said that the opening celebration on June 6 will start with a motorcade around Silay participated in by 15 lin-ay candidates escorted by Negros Ecotrail, Adventure Club and other organized motorcycle groups.
Montelibano added that “Kinaon Libre nga Valenciana sa Plaza” is sponsored by the Liga ng mga Barangay in cooperation with the Market Vendors Association.
Kabataang Silay Rondalla and Hugyaw Silay Dance Group will present “Pandot – Saot”, a repertoire of Philippine dances, at Silay City covered court, 6pm.
Other highlights at the opening day are badminton tournament, motor show at civic center, employee’s variety show and band wagon night at the Food Park.
Sunday’s Big Event (June 7) is Lin-ay Sang Silay Talent Show at the plaza covered court, 6pm.
Other attractions are taekwondo tournament, volleyball championship games, auto sound-off in front of Balay Negrense and Battle of the Bands at the plaza.
